Dark and absorbing

Mark and Deb are in their 40s and their marriage is on the rocks. Deb has a drinking problem. Mark has a big crush on their neighbor Karen. Deb thinks they're having an affair, but meanwhile she is having an affair with Owen, age 18, who is also carrying on with Karen's daughter Elana, who is best friends with Deb's daughter Riley. And that's just the first few chapters.....a combustible situation as it is, add to that the fact that there are a couple of extremely disturbed people involved. Things turn very dark very quickly.

I liked the author's style of writing, he's equally good at conveying the thoughts of males and females, adults and teens. His dialogue is authentic and convincing. There are only a few things I'd have changed: we know whodunit pretty early on, so we are just waiting for the denouement. While it is engaging and gripping, there are no twists and turns, no surprises, nothing new revealed at the end. the pace is a bit uneven as well, there's quite a long section about 2/3 in of Karen's indignation when her workmates make assumptions, and then more when the police make assumptions, again when the reporters do, and when her ex-husband does, and when Mark does....whereas the book wraps up in a bit of a hurry, and the exciting climax is pretty short.

I have a feeling this is one of those cases where an author is famous enough that not much editorial work is done, and in this case there are some glaring mistakes.
"His teeth grinded." Pretty sure that isn't even a word.
"She saw the blinds on the living room window rustle." Pretty sure that is a noise. An invisible one.
"Her lower teeth tore into her gums...." I'm trying this. I don't think it's possible.
"She went into the teacher's bathroom, where she lost it, balling hysterically." Ummmm......no.

had to laugh because one of the characters is repeatedly described as looking like Javier Bardem...then I got to the author's photo in the back of the book.....and he looks like Javier Bardem.

This book is just plain bad

If you’re anything like me, sometimes you just need a mindless, fast-paced page-turner. I knew more or less what I was getting myself into when I picked this up, but I didn’t expect it to be so…bad.

I often enjoy books that examine the dark underside of domestic suburban life - Tom Perrotta comes to mind - but this is like if you took a book like that and stripped it of anything intelligent or thought-provoking. Any semblance of attempted satire is obscured by its utter silliness.

The characters are one-dimensional cliches whose actions are so delusional and unbelievable that it’s hard to keep reading. In fact, I’m not even sure why I stuck with it. Maybe for the same reason I’ll sometimes get sucked into watching a Lifetime movie.

It’s a fast, easy read, so it’s hard to feel too resentful toward it, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

the writing was dreadful, the story unbelievable and predictable and it was full of incongruencies - it is one of the few books I have not finished reading. I would not recommend anyone buys this book

Conquer - Clara and Alexander's Drive to Overcome Obstacles

In book one of Geneva Lee’s Royals Saga, Prince Alexander commanded Clara Bishop’s body and then her heart, dictating what she gave him and when, and while that worked for Clara through much of the book, at the end, Clara exerted her independence and walked away from the man who freed her in so many ways because she couldn’t be a kept secret, and she couldn’t get past all of the secrets he was keeping from her, even if some of them were for her own good.

As Conquer Me begins, Clara is dealing with the aftermath of losing the love of her life, existing as best she can. By exerting her self worth, Clara crushed her heart, but she knows there are limits to what she is willing to endure for love, and without actions on Alexander’s part, his promises mean nothing to her. But what she doesn’t know as she tries to traverse her lonely existence and not go back to old habits is that Alexander misses and craves her just as much as she does him and when that information comes to light, Clara will have to decide if she can willingly give her body and soul to Alexander again and face the letdown that may occur again due to Alexander’s obligation to his country, his duties to his family, and the many people who refuse to acknowledge her position next to him.

The idea of being conquered is a multi-layered concept for both Clara and Alexander, and its applicability reaches further than just their relationship. Clara must overcome her self doubt, her inability to control every situation, her need to know all of Alexander’s secrets, and her anxiety of what being a part of Alexander’s “real” world means for her and her life. Alexander must surmount the obstacles in his path due to his royal obligations and his father’s manipulation as well as prevail against Clara’s frees and insecurities. It’s a tangled web that Alexander must commandeer around but at the end of it if it means having the one woman who helps to conquer his demons and satisfy his body as well as his soul then it’s worth all of the torment and disruptions that overwhelm him.

Conquer Me is a great follow up to Command Me and delves deeper into the sensual relationship that exists between Alexander and Clara. The chemistry between them is still at the forefront of the text and the way Alexander commands Clara’s body proves exactly how sexually compatible they are. Getting snippets of Alexander’s point of view also adds to the dynamics of the text, offering necessary insight into his true feelings and what he’s willing to do to claim the woman who owns him even more than she truly understands. There is a lot of outside pressure closing in on Clara and Alexander that threatens to put another divide between them, forcing Alexander to seduce Clara’s body to get what he wants, and while that is how he’s used to getting his way, there’s more to their relationship now, and I would have liked it examined a bit more by them opening up to each other, giving in to more than just their sexual impulses. I’m sure, though, that that will come with time and truths revealed, which I will be anxiously waiting for in Crown Me.

More questions than answers, but so good!

This book lived up to everything I'd been hoping it would. More secrets were revealed, allegiances and alliances became clear, and Clara and Alexander went through a lot, but their journey still isn't over yet. Geneva Lee once again managed to grab my attention and not let it go.

I was a little conflicted on how I felt about Clara and Alexander in this book. It was their separation that bothered me. I couldn't for the life of me understand why Alexander couldn't be with Clara. She wasn't a "nobody", she was British, and he clearly loved her, even if he couldn't say it. Did I understand that there were certain expectations of him as a royal and the heir, yes. But that didn't mean he had to give up the one person that gave him peace. Their back and forth was rough on both of them, and me, but it got to the point where I wanted them to decide once and for all what they were going to do.

I was disgusted with the royals, excluding Alexander and Edward (his brother), in Command Me, and that definitely didn't change in Conquer Me. Some of the information revealed truly disgusted and horrified me. You'd think such political machinations were gone now that we lived in modern times. Pepper was still a snake in the grass and no one disgusted me more than her and plenty of people came close.

Geneva Lee has done a fantastic job at both revealing and concealing secrets. Every time I think that's it, she reveals another piece of the puzzle, taking me back to square one. Crown Me has a lot of questions to answer and I can't wait to read it and find out what the mysterious epilogue meant!

Must read in order, absolutely the best series I've read in a while!

If you like hot alpha males that don't think love is in their plans for life, and emotionally broken females that turn their world upside down....this is the series you don't want to miss. I loved the first book in the series as much as this one. The characters are real with jobs, families that drive them insane, and secrets they want to stay buried. Alexander warns Chloe that he'll break her heart but the chemistry is too strong to ignore. His dad"the king" is determined to stand in their way of happiness . My heart broke for Clara when he belittled her, and for Edward when he had to keep his own love life a secret for fear of his father. The sex scenes are hot and with feeling, not just porn. I can't wait to down load the final installment to see them both get their happily ever after.

Mistery of Gogol

Since the age of ten when I first read some works by Nikolai Gogol I was mesmerized by the mystery of his obscure and secluded life and tragic end (he burned the second part of his biggest work just several days before his death). At that time I knew nothing about the homosexuality. Karlinsky's book is not only an account of the past, a life story of a person who lived a long time ago, it is a story of struggle with the inner self, the unability to accept one's own sexuality 'as is' which played the tragic role in the fate of that famed Russian writer from a small Ukrainian village.

The truth hooted down

When this book first appeared, the New York Review of Books issued a long review in which the whole point of the book was dismissed as some sort of wishful thinking on the part of an author with an agenda. But the evidence is overwhelming that Karlinsky is correct in his opinion, and that Gogol can never be understood except from this standpoint. Imagine a major reviewing organ dismissing "theories" as to somebody like Wilde, Gide, Verlaine, etc., and one can see the magnitude of the absurdity of the dismissive review.

About the Author
Michael Levy, PhD, is the Charles Clarke Reynolds Professor of Marketing and Director of the Retail Supply Chain Institute at Babson College. He received his PhD in business administration from The Ohio State University and his undergraduate and MS degrees in business administration from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He taught at Southern Methodist University before joining the faculty as professor and chair of the marketing department at the University of Miami. Professor Levy has developed a strong stream of research in retailing, business logistics, financial retailing strategy, pricing, and sales management. He has published over 50 articles in leading marketing and logistics journals, including the Journal of Retailing, Journal of Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and Journal of Marketing Research. He currently serves on the editorial review board of the Journal of Retailing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, International Journal of Logistics Management, International Journal of Logistics and Materials Management, ECR Journal, and European Business Review. He is coauthor of Retailing Management, 6e (2007), the best-selling college-level retailing text in the world. Professor Levy was co-editor of Journal of Retailing from 2001–2007. Professor Levy has worked in retailing and related disciplines throughout his professional life. Prior to his academic career, he worked for several retailers and a housewares distributor in Colorado. He has performed research projects with many retailers and retail technology firms, including Accenture, Federated Department Stores, Khimetrics, Mervyn’s, Neiman Marcus, ProfitLogic (Oracle), Zale Corporation, and numerous law firms. He co-chaired the 1993 Academy of Marketing Science conference and the 2006 Summer AMA conference.

Dhruv Grewal, PhD (Virginia Tech), is the Toyota Chair in Commerce and Electronic Business and a professor of marketing at Babson College. His research and teaching interests focus on marketing foundations, marketing research, retailing, pricing, and value-based strategies. He was awarded the 2005 Lifetime Achievement in Behavioral Pricing Award by Fordham University. He is a “Distinguished Fellow” of the Academy of Marketing Science. He has also coauthored Marketing Research (2004, 2007). Professor Grewal has published over 70 articles in journals such as Journal of Marketing, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Retailing, and Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science. He currently serves on numerous editorial review boards, including Journal of Retailing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Interactive Marketing, and Journal of Public Policy & Marketing. He served as co-editor of Journal of Retailing from 2001–2007. Professor Grewal has won many awards for his teaching including, 2005 Sherwin-Williams Distinguished Teaching Award, SMA; 2003 AMA Award for Innovative Excellence in Marketing Education; 1999 AMS Great Teachers in Marketing Award; Executive MBA Teaching Excellence Award (1998); School of Business Teaching Excellence Awards (1993, 1999); and Virginia Tech Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Teaching (1989). He co-chaired: 1993 AMS Conference, 1998 Winter AMA Conference, a 1998 Marketing Science Institute Conference, 2001 AMA doctoral consortium, and 2006 Summer AMA Conference. Professor Grewal has taught executive seminars and courses and/or worked on research projects with numerous firms, such as IRI, TJX, Radio Shack, Monsanto, McKinsey, Motorola, and numerous law firms. He has taught seminars in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.

Missing the access code card.

The book arrived brand new and arrived fine, however I did not receive a "code" card so that I can access online homework assignments and quizzes. I now have to pay $50 to access this from the book company.

the book was in very good condition. One word of caution

Overall, the book was in very good condition. One word of caution. If you have a class that requires you access the lessons on-line, you will need a code. The used copy does not have it, only the new one. Otherwise, it costs around $90 to access the on-line materials if you do not have the code.

Awesome source of information. Even though is a rental, I received a completely new book. Will rent books again and will recommend it if you need a book for college without breaking your pocket
