About the Author
Born in 1864 in England, James Allen took his first job at fifteen to support his family. Allen worked as a factory knitter and later a private secretary before writing his first book, "From Poverty to Power", in 1901. In 1903 he completed his best-known work: "As a Man Thinketh". Allen wrote nineteen books, including his spiritual journal, "The Light of Reason, "before he died at age forty-seven in 1912. While not widely known during his lifetime, Allen later came to be seen as a pioneer of contemporary inspirational literature.

Much like the message in "As a Man Thinketh," this book reminds us that many want to improve something externally when the solution is internal.

The truth about yourself and your experiences are found by searching deeply in your heart.

"Out From the Heart," also advises that to purify our hearts, we must master the fundamental lessons of virtue:

1. Physical Discipline;

2. Mental Discipline;

3. Willingness to perform your best;

4. Self-honesty; and,

5. Forgiveness.

And this little 54-page is a nice reminder of what matters when you want to make the storms of your soul obey you.

Important considerations when evaluating the usefulness of this book.

As many other reviewers have noted, this is the only book on the market that is produced by ETS, the company that writes and administers the GRE; however, please know that this does not mean that buying this book is a no-brainer. Far from it. The book may be helpful to you in some respects, but I would never recommend purchasing only it to study for the GRE. I would buy it perhaps as a supplement to a book published by a third-party (like Barron's, the Princeton Review, Kaplan, etc) or not at all. These third party books really are likely to serve you FAR better, as I will try to explain. Here are the things I think you should consider as you decide whether to purchase this book:

1) The majority of the practice questions in this book are available for FREE on the ETS website. Just check out their "Prepare for the GRE" page for pdfs.
2) The POWERPREP II software (including two practice tests) which is contained on the disc accompanying this book is also available for FREE on the ETS website. Just check out their "Prepare for the GRE" page for a download.
3) Whether you go with the book or get it online, the POWERPREP II software is Windows/IE-compatible only. (Ridiculous.)
4) The Math Review section of this book is also available for FREE on the ETS website. Just check out their "Prepare for the GRE" page for a download.
5) Many of the other explanations and general tips contained in the book are also included in the free online materials (I think it's called the Practice Book) on the ETS website.
6) All that said, if you prefer to work on paper rather than on a PDF, and you don't want to print out a giant stack of pages, you may like the idea of having ETS' materials nicely printed and bound as they are in this book.
7) One nice thing about the fact that this book was written by ETS is that you get actual old GRE questions. ETS doesn't license its old questions, so all other books will have questions meant to closely approximate authentic GRE questions, but which never actually appeared on a GRE exam. However, since you can get most of these ETS-authentic practice questions for free, as I've explained, you still may not want to spend on this book. Plus, the questions that third-parties write are, for the most part, similar enough to real GRE questions to still be very good practice.
8) The down side (and I think you should think about this carefully) to this being written by ETS is that it, naturally, sells the "ETS-Kool-Aid" - HARD. What I mean is that other third-parties will shoot you straight because they are not invested in promoting the mystique of this exam. They will tell you, for example, the true fact that the GRE really measures your ability to do well on the GRE, whereas ETS' book will claim, as ETS of course must, that the GRE is predictive of your success in graduate school. In addition, third-party books will level with you about how the GRE is written and how it is graded and will teach you tips, tricks, techniques, and work-arounds for the GRE. ETS has to take itself and its exam very, very seriously, which is likely to just scare you and stress you out. Third-parties will level with you. (See also the next point.)
9) (This is to some degree an extension of the previous point.) The Math Review that the ETS has written (recall it is also available for free online) is very misleading in some ways. Firstly, it can be confusingly-presented for those dusting off old, unused math skills. Third-party prep books will serve you far better in explaining these concepts simply, although if you need help with very basic concepts (like long division), you may want to supplement with something like Princeton Review's Math Smart I (or maybe check out tutorials online if you want to save money). Secondly, there are some math topics covered by ETS in their materials that you are simply very unlikely to see on the actual GRE; seeing them in this book will just make you anxious. You do not need to master all the math ETS gives you in this book in order to get a great score on the math portion of the GRE (after all, you can still score in the 99th percentile of test-takers even if you get a few questions wrong on the test). ETS will make it sound like you must know inside and out all the math they give you in this book, but third-party books will be much more honest with you about which concepts you actually need to master, what short-hand tips and tricks you can use, what things you may just want to memorize outright, and what minimum understandings you can totally get by with on some of the trickier math topics that might come up on the GRE.
10) Only third-party books give you actual lists of vocab words that are the most likely to appear on the GRE. This book does not. These lists are very useful in studying for the GRE.

Some final thoughts. No book will guarantee you an awesome score on an exam. I suspect many poor reviews of various test-prep books on Amazon are likely just sour grapes. The truth, in my opinion, is that major third-party prep books are probably roughly equivalent in getting you familiar with, giving you good tips for, and getting you some practice on GRE questions. You have enough to worry about without stressing over which book to choose! Just pick up one of the major third-party books and let it be your primary study guide. Get this book, if at all, only as a supplement.

Unrealistic expectations from the reader

To make this review short I will just say that if you are an individual such as myself, who has struggled with math since grade school and are now trying to learn enough math to get a humble score on the GRE this is not the book you should be purchasing. This book assumes that you already have a decent understanding of mathematical concepts in Geometry, Algebra, and Statistics. For those of us who are majoring in social sciences or another non math related field this book will feel like it is skimming through weeks worth of math concepts on every single page.

I found it to be utterly impossible to understand many of the ideas presented in the book due to the cluttering of these concepts and marginal explanation of how they work together. I found the Princeton Review book to be much more organized and easy to follow due to my severe math deficiencies. The Princeton review does not attempt to teach you 3 years of math by giving you a extremely condensed and limited version of concepts that you barely understood the first time around. Instead its focus is on helping you simply get through the GRE. This book does not even allow you to look at the answer choices in the practice problems as A,B,C,D,E as you would have them on the GRE so it forces you to do the problems their way without actually providing you with enough explanation to understand those problems in the first place. The Princeton review embraces the idea of turning a hard algebra problem into a simple arithmetic problem by plugging in, this book does not even mention this invaluable strategy! Nor does it let you apply it because as stated previously, it does not provide you with A,B,C,D,E answer choices!

If you are someone who has done well in math in the past and just need a refresher for the GRE I recommend this book for you however, if you are like myself, an individual who has struggled with math since elementary school, avidly avoided math in college, and are now trying to pursue a graduate education in your (non math related) field then I would highly advice you to look into both the Princeton review and the GRE for Dummies 7th Edition books. Although not perfect they are much easier to understand for those of us who are dreadful at math.

The ETS Does It Again! Sort of. Ok not really.

As you likely know from either the title or familiarity with the ETS, this book is the Official Guide for the GRE General Test (Revised). I teach the GRE full-time and this is one of two books I require my students to purchase for two primary reasons. This is the only book made by the test-makers, so there is an extraordinarily amount of useful information here: the questions are phrased in the way that the real test phrases them, the content is fairly reflective of the real exam, and the book itself now comes with 2 paper-based and 2 computer-based versions of the test. So, in total, there are hundreds of questions to try your hand at. Secondly, each question comes with a very lengthy explanation as to why certain answers are right and often enough, why other answers are wrong.

The ETS is also kind enough to identify which questions are of what difficulty level, so you can even mark your own progress fairly well, too.

The book further comes with examples of responses to the Analytical Writing tasks, so you have a very good sense of what the ETS thinks of as "a good essay" and "a bad essay", as well.

The book is, however, fairly lacking on a number of other counts. It is not particularly useful as a stand-alone text and once you've exhausted the questions in the book, there are no other resources to use outside of it from the ETS. Additionally--and most importantly--the book lacks a functionally useful set of questions to really build on basic mathematics skills and takes for granted that test-takers will be able to perform particular operations.

My biggest gripe about the book is it's Quantitative Review (Pages 207-305), in which there are no explanations for sample problems and often, concepts are covered in ways that are actually almost unusable for the test itself. Bizarrely, in spite of the fact that the test consistently features Special Right Triangles (Pythagorean Triplets) and often requires test-takers to simplify radicals, the book makes no mention of either of these basic math concepts. These are two among many others.

Additionally, the test does not often inform students of the most efficient or effective way of working through a problem. They'll give a very accurate description of how to solve math problems in some cases, but not if it's optimal for ideal test-taking. As a prime example, there are right triangle questions featured on almost every version of the GRE and almost all of the right triangles featured have particular properties to them. But, the GRE Guide makes no mention of these properties and test-takers are left to their own devices to either figure them out or work around them in the most inefficient ways.

The book is a sort of oddity, as such: it purports to be the Official Guide of the test but it also seems purposefully left incomplete, as if the test-makers wanted to provide some help in making the test accessible, but not so much help that anyone could effectively study for it using their own materials. The cynical conclusion one might draw from this is that the ETS is heavily invested in maintaining the secrecy and mysteriousness of the test (and is also invested in test-takers re-testing) but they don't want the test to seem unduly unfair.

To improve this product, they should include more practice sets that are divided up by concept (rather than simply by difficulty) and further, they should revamp the math review, which has not changed since the good ole' days of the original GRE Guide (which was originally published over 20 years ago).

The six-step approach outlined here has evolved over the past twenty years, during which time the authors have taught curriculum development and evaluation skills to faculty and fellows in the Johns Hopkins University Faculty Development Program for Clinician-Educators. Program participants have used the techniques described to develop curricula on such diverse topics as preclerkship skills building, clinical reasoning and shared decision making, outpatient internal medicine, musculoskeletal disorders, office gynecology for the generalist, chronic illness and disability, geriatrics for nongeriatric faculty, surgical skills assessment, laparoscopic surgical skills, cross-cultural competence, and medical ethics.

This thoroughly revised edition includes a broad discussion of competencies mandated by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and other bodies, current information on education technology, increased emphasis on scholarships related to curriculum development, and advice on obtaining institutional review board approval. Updated examples throughout the book illustrate major points. The expanded appendixes include samples of complete curricula and information on funding, faculty development, and curricular resources.

Book necessary for a class, a must read for me, specialized in scope. Would not read for pleasure, certainly. Just as you'd expect a textbook--sometimes interesting, sometimes perfunctory. Book itself arrived with half the pages bent back and it is printed on cheap (newspaper-like) paper, but arrived in a timely manner, service was fine, good transaction otherwise.

A Handbook of Material Management in Lean Production

This book contains a lot of formulas and its origin. Many examples are used to explain the formula in detail. Besides that, there are many study cases in the end of every chapter. This explanation on the formula, its origin, examples and study cases is the streght of this book.
The weakness of this book is that it discusses a broad topics, From inventory to forecast, from supply chain to Just In time.
This broad topic makes this book has no focus at all.
Furthermore, this book doesn't define the definition of "Lean Production Systems" well. After I read this book, the question of 'What is a Lean Production Systems' is still not clear.
The other weakness is that this book emphasises on the material flow very much. Shortly this book is rather logistic management (in internal company) than manufacturing / process management.

Easily the worst textbook I've purchased during all my years at university. There's mistakes all over and the problems at the end of the chapters are vague and poorly worded. There's a reason it's not received a second edition!

very good book for Production

This book is very good, Askin defines very well what Lean Production Systems are (page 352 and on), don't believe the above reviews, they didn't read the book in detail. Of course the book has a broad range of things, because is oriented for Industrial Engineers. This book has all that other books in operations research or books in production and operations don't have. The scheduling chapter is impressive, and there's a lot more. God for students, professors but great for professionals.

If you want a scholarship you will find it here

Extremely informative book that extensively lists any scholarship you might think of and those you won't. What is especially helpful is the categories of scholarships (by activities, nationalities, home state etc...). If you really look at the types of categories you will find some scholarships you may never have thought of (at least that was the case for me). Truly worth the money.

A Must Buy for College High School Senior Parents

As a parent this is a great book to have. Granted its 3 inches thick. But we were able to find and apply to a number of scholarships which resulted in almost $10K in aid for our college freshman.

You have to apply to win - but it does work.

Would I buy these again - Most definitely!

Not what I expected, unfortunately

The book is too disorganized to help you with the scholarship research process, especially if you are a graduate or returning to school student. For instance, in the State section you would expect for the scholarships to start from Alabama - Wyoming, instead you are presented with scholarships in different states(e.g. the first scholarship is from Ohio followed by Hawaii, followed by Arkansas). You have to read each and every scholarship in the State section to make sure you did not miss any scholarships in your state. I also think readers would benefit from separating scholarships that are strictly catered to high schools students, graduate and returning adults. If you are a grad student, you have to spend a lot of time distilling the scholarships. The good points were that there were many scholarships and I did enjoy Sections 1- 6, which is great, but the organization of the book makes it hard for someone to research, especially if you are a graduate, returning to college or continuing you education student. I would recommend for high school students only.

Great volume highlights Storm Thorgerson's iconic images for The Floyd

I preordered this volume from Amazon on Feb. 7th this year. The publishing date of April 3rd came and went, and there was no action on my order. Over time it became apparent that Amazon didn't have any copies. So I eventually ordered a copy from a 3rd party seller.

Now that I finally have the volume in hand, I'm very pleased to have it in my library. It is a great record of the late Storm Thorgerson's iconic work for Pink Floyd. The volume is of very good quality and the art work reproduction is outstanding.

There is a lot more copy than I expected, as Storm comments on the images we have all come to know and love--the prism, the handshake, the flying pig, the river of beds--telling us the stories behind the images. I have a pretty good collection of Floyd material, and so a good deal of the background info is not new to me, but it's nevertheless welcome to have it all included in one handsome volume.

Surprisingly, for a 5th edition, I have so far found two rather strange errors. When addressing "Meddle", Storm refers to the track "Breathless," which I have to believe should be "Fearless", and just a couple pages later refers to a Robert Plant album of "A Question of Balance", which doesn't seem to exist (although there is a Moody Blues album by that name).

Fans of Pink Floyd and rock-and-roll images generally will definitely like this 5th edition. It's gorgeous.

Showing off Storm's work in style

Wow... what an awesome trip through the history of Pink Floyd, by the man who created or helped create so many of the band's iconic album covers and artwork. Not much material from The Wall (and none from The Final Cut), but I knew that going in, as Storm was not involved with those albums. Overall, it's a great tribute not only to an incredible band, but of Storm and his team who worked amazing magic and did much of it the hard way. Highly recommended for anyone who is a fan of Floyd or just great album artwork.

Can't stand eBook format!

The eBook's format I can't stand! It's fixed format but done line a lt of comic books where you touch a section of a page of caption and it focuses on just that piece making it not just difficult to look at the whole page but worse yet, it's hard to turn the page because those snippets keep going to the focus. Definitely not spending $30 for that. I'll have to get the printed version.

GREAT GUIDE TO SPORTS AND THE LAW

The sports world is such a mystery and this book helps me understand it. Most books start out with a warm up of hey this is the law and blah,blah,blah...this books says hello want to become a sports agent right in the first chapter. I have to say this book does not intimidate me as a reader it is more of a guide to sports and the law. A must buy if you are even thinking about becoming a sports agent or sports paralegal.

A Textbook For All Audiences

I have found this text be simple yet extremely informative. Based upon what the author wrote, the audience for the textbook is the non-law student. Well, even so I believe that it would serve as a fine addition to any sports and the law class in law school. I especially enjoyed the weight given to international issues and the Olympic Games.

About the Author
CHIGOZIE OBIOMA was born in 1986 in Akure, Nigeria. His short stories have appeared in the Virginia Quarterly Review and New Madrid. He was a Fall 2012 OMI Fellow at Ledig House, New York. He has lived in Nigeria, Cyprus and Turkey, and currently resides in the United States, where he has completed an MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Michigan. The Fishermen is his first novel.

A story about stories

I read a lot but I don't write many reviews because, in most cases, other reviewers have already said everything that I would say. With The Fishermen, though, I want to point out that this novel isn't just about Nigeria. This novel provides smart narrative insight into the way that stories affect human lives. The novel, which is set in Nigeria in the 1990s, revolves around a Nigerian family (and the story is also an allegory of Nigeria's political history) but the implications in this novel can be seen in human dynamics anywhere in the world and at any time in history. The narrative is specific but the themes are universal.

The truth is, stories affect us. We become invested in the stories we're told and our investment comes with consequences. The Fisherman brings this truth to light through a vibrant, compelling narrative. At times, I felt sorry for the brothers in this story or I was angry at them. At other times, I was happy for them or hopeful. What's important to me is that, from beginning to end, I always felt something. The Fishermen explored several profound philosophical themes, but the author didn't neglect the characters or sacrifice the basic narrative while looking more deeply into the human condition.

I try to read literary fiction more often than popular fiction because I'm human, so I'm always looking for intellectual growth. Unfortunately, a lot of contemporary literary fiction is more concerned with deploying literary themes than with crafting a strong and compelling narrative. The Fishermen is a wonderful work that doesn't sacrifice entertainment while giving the reader enlightenment. Honestly, I'm awed by Obioma's ability to entertain me and keep me enthralled in the story, while simultaneously giving me philosophical food for thought. The novel is also beautifully written, with language that is poetic without being pretentious. I bought this book for myself on Amazon, but it feels like a gift.

Very sad but worth the read.

I grew up in Akure, although a few years older, and on the other side of town from Chigozie. It is so great to read a very lively and well-told story about that idyllic and quiet town. Most of the events Chigozie refers to are true. They actually brought many memories of my childhood back to me and the nostalgia made me call up old friends and family while I was reading the book. The story itself is a lot to take in. It is very surprising and quite painful, but don't be afraid, Chigozie with his mastery of language and patience with delivery helps you to work through it in stages. The theme, that our greatest fears usually come upon us, not because those fears are powerful in and of themselves, but because we give them power by focusing on them, is a great lesson for everyone - regardless of your origin, gender, or upbringing. This is a great book!

The Fishermen was set in the 1990s in Nigeria written by Chigozie Obioma. The book was told in the perspective of Benjamin, the youngest of the four brothers. Ben recounts memories with his other three brothers, Ikenna, Boja, and Obembe, along with his other family members and those apart of the Akure community. Conflict beings when their father moves to a far city for work, so he is no longer a big impact in their lives. Ikenna then assumes the role as the leader of the family because the father is gone. They begin cutting class to fish at the long forbidden river, Omi-Ala. As they were fishing one day, they come across the known madman of Abulu, who continues to call for Ikenna. (SPOILER ALERT!!!) Abulu prophesies that Ikenna will be killed by a fishermen, and Ikenna assumes it will be one of his brothers. From then, Ikenna distances himself from his whole family, leading to a break in the whole family. The family falls apart of the mother attempts to connect them all by turning to prayer and having father reprimand them. As tension heightens, Ikenna is killed, and Boja dies. And nothing can bring this family together again.The book has a dramatic ending with Ben recounting all the one year’s worth of events in court.
In my opinion, I really liked the book. The whole book was very coherent and descriptive. Also, I liked the whole theme behind the book, which was community and family connection. This whole book is an allegory for what was happening in Nigeria at the time. Obioma was very descriptive throughout the whole book in each scenario. He portrayed the lives of the people in Nigeria at this time really well. Also, the ending was very captivating in that the whole book was just Ben recalling the past year to a jury. And this whole story took place within a year. This book relates to In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. Both Alvarez and Obioma described families struggling within a country. However, in In the Time of the Butterflies, Alvarez writes about the Mirabal sisters and their oppression in the Dominican Republic while Obioma writes about a family that was once really close lose all connections. But they both expose the life of families in a specific country during the time.
This book has an really interesting plot. Not only that, but it is also super relatable. Anyone will be able to connect with at least one character in the story. There was continuous action, and something new or some conflict always occurred, keeping readers attached and not wanting to put the book down. However, the whole book seemed very climactic, consistently building up the book, but it took away from the realism from the actual story. Also, some of the book was predictable because Obioma foreshadows a lot, but this was also a positive for the book as Obioma executed this really well. Another good thing about the book is that is was really easy and simple to read even though it had a deeper meaning behind it. Having some background information about Nigeria at the time will also make it easier to connect to the book. So therefore, this book is recommended for everyone to read because it is interesting overall.
