The best PMBOK yet; a must-have for PMP exam

As a project management instructor and course developer at a state university, a project management keynote speaker, and someone who has been training project managers for nearly two decades, I highly recommend this book. I have also helped hundreds to pass their PMP exams (including training PMI employees) and although some folks claim they passed without this, I firmly believe that the PMBOK is a must-have.

I have owned every edition of the PMBOK and I can tell you that it's gotten better with age. Let's face it, the material isn't the most exciting but at least it's much more readable than ever. Processes are more refined (some may remember core vs. facilitating processes in older versions) and are titled more consistently (used to have some start with verbs and others with nouns), descriptions of inputs/tools & techniques/outputs are clearer, and illustrations are less confusing. That said, the book still only covers the "whats". If you actually want to know "how" to execute some of these processes, you will need another resource like Project Management: A Systems Approach to Planning, Scheduling, and Controlling.

For those who have seen some of the PMBOK's poor ratings in reviews of previous versions, you have to understand that this is a high-level guide, not an elaborate text or a mystery novel. As a result, do not expect to be a project management guru at the end or be entertained with creative irony.

Anyway, since many of you are looking at this because you want to take the PMP exam, here is some advice:

- Although you may be able to obtain a soft copy of this book by being a PMI member, I recommend having a physical copy. In all my years of schooling, I've never even used a highlighter but I did for the PMBOK when I was studying for this exam over a decade ago. It turns out that almost everything was worth highlighting but it forced me to read each line thoroughly.

- You will need another book since many exam concepts aren't even covered in the PMBOK. I personally like PMP Exam Prep, Seventh Edition: Rita's Course in a Book for Passing the PMP Exam or CAPM/PMP Project Management Certification All-in-One Exam Guide with CD-ROM, Second Edition. You do not even need the latest editions. Trust me, the general concepts will be the same. For instance, earned value lessons in Rita's 1st edition from yesteryear will be the same as those in 7th or 8th editions. SPI will always be EV/PV.

- When submitting project experience on the application, you can submit work even if your title was not Project Manager. If you worked on projects and have played a lead role, it may count so submit it. The key point is that you should be submitting project leadership activities. You still need 4500 hours of project experience if you have a bachelors or 7500 hours without a bachelors. Also, always submit more than those thresholds since some activities may be not be accepted.

- Do not buy flash cards; instead, make your own. Get a stack of index cards and start writing terms/concepts on one side with definitions/formulas/descriptions on the back side.

Must have for PMP exam

This is the backbone for the PMP test. If you are a member of PMI, you can download a PDF version for free. But it is always good to have a hard copy.

This shouldn't be your only resource if you plan to take the PMP exam. It doesn't give you all the knowledge you need to pass the exam, which is odd. Rita Mulcahy's prep book is a must read. So is the Head First PMP book, which explains everything in plain English.

I found it best to read the books in this order: Rita -> PMBOK -> Head First

In preparation for the exam, know the Project Management Process Groups & Knowledge Areas inside and out. Learn the inputs & outputs. Also know the formulas and network diagrams. Do a lot of practice exams.

Note: This version (fifth edition) is for those planning to take the test after August 2013. If you want to take the test before mid-July, you need the 4th edition of PMBOK.

One more note: I signed up for the PMP Boot Camp by my local PMI chapter. It was terrible - a complete waste of time!!!! If you want to do a boot camp, spend the extra money and sign up with a company that specializes in training.

Necessary for PMP exam - CD ROM version is convenient

I found having the PMBOK in Adobe Acrobat format to be a real convenience and prefer it to the paper version. Note: while you can download a copy of this document from PMI's web site, it's a preview version that is missing chapters 2, 4-12 and appendices A through F. Therefore, if you need a copy of the PMBOK 2000 version your options are to purchase either the CD ROM or the book.
PMI has put a lot of work into this version. Compared to the 1996 version this one reads better, shows clearer relationships between knowledge areas, and has been greatly expanded in some of the knowledge areas - most notably risk management and earned value project management. The CD ROM version that I am reviewing has additional refinements that make this media easier to work with. The 1996 version in electronic format was a collection of standalone Adobe Acrobat files, this version is a single Acrobat file that makes good use of Acrobat's navigation features.
If your reason for buying the PMBOK 2000 is to prepare for the Project Management Professional certification you have two choices: CD ROM or book, because this is the primary source of test questions. Heed the previous reviewer's comments that the 2001 examinations will also use the 1996 version as a basis for test questions. If you are buying this book to implement project management processes that conform to the PMBOK and work in the computer industry I recommend that you also look at Information Technology Project Management by Kathy Schwalbe. That book presents a project management approach for IT projects that is closely aligned to the PMBOK.

About the Author
Donald E. Kieso, Ph.D., C.P.A., received his bachelor's degree from Aurora University and his doctorate in accounting from the University of Illinois. he has served as chairman of the Department of Accountancy and is currently the KPMG Peat Marwick Emeritus Professor of Accounting at Northern Illinois University. He has public accounting experience with Price Waterhouse & Co.(San Francisco and Chicago) and Arthur Andersen & Co. (Chicago) and research experience with the research Division of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (New York). He has done postdoctorate work as a Visiting Scholar at he University of California at Berkeley and is a recipient of NIU's Teaching Excellence Award and four Golden Apple Teaching Awards. Professor Kieso is the author of other accounting and business books and is a member of the American Accounting Association, the American Institute of certified Public Accountants, and the Illinois CPA Society. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Illinois CPA Society, the AACSB's Accounting Accreditation Committees, the State of Illinois Comptroller's Commission, as Secretary-Treasure of the Federation of Schools of Accountancy, and as Secretary-Treasurer of the American Accounting Association. Professor Kieso served as a charter member of the national Accounting Education Change Commission. He is the recipient of the Outstanding Accounting Educator Award from the Illinois CPA Society, the FSA's Joseph A. Silvoso Award of Merit, and the NIU Foundation's Humanitarian Award for Service to Higher Education.

Jerry J. Weygandt, Ph.D., C.P.A, is Arthur Andersen Alumni Professor of Accounting at the University ofWisconsin-Madison. He Holds a Ph.D. in accounting from the University of Illinois. Articles by Professor Weygandt have appeared in the Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting research, Accounting Horizons, Journal of Accountancy, and other academic and professional journals. These articles have examined such financial reporting issues as accounting for price-level adjustments, pensions, convertible securities, stock option contracts, and interim reports. Professor Weygandt is author of other accounting and financial reporting books and is a member of the American Accounting Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He has served on numerous committees of the American Accounting Association and as a member of the editorial board of the Accounting Review; he also has served as President and Secretary-Treasurer of the American Accounting Association. In addition, he has been actively involved with the American Institute of certified Public Accountants and has been a member of the Accounting Standards Executive Committee (AcSEC) of that organization. He has served on the FASB task force that examined the reporting issues related to accounting for income taxes and as a trustee of the Financial Accounting Foundation. Professor Weygandt has received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Beta Gamma Sigma Dean's Teaching Award. He is on the Board of Directors of M & I Bank of Southern Wisconsin. He is the recipient of the Wisconsin Institute of CPA's Outstanding Educator's Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2001 he received the American Accounting Association's Outstanding Accounting Educator Award.

Terry D. Warfield, Ph.D. isassociate professor of accounting at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received a B.S. and M.B.A from Indiana University and a Ph.D. in accounting from the University of Iowa. Professor Warfield's area of expertise is financial reporting, and prior to his academic career, he worked for five years in the banking industry. He served as the Academic Accounting Fellow in the Office of the Chief Accountant at the U.S. Securities and Exchange commission in Washington, D.C. from 1995-1996). Professor Warfield's primary research interests concern financial accounting standards and disclosure policies. He has published scholarly articles in the Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Research in Accounting Regulation, and Accounting Horizons, and he has served on the editorial boards of the Accounting Review, Accounting Horizons, and Issues in Accenting Education. He has served as president of the Financial Accounting and Reporting Section, the Financial Accounting Standards Committee of the American Accounting Association (Chair 1995-1996), and on the AAA-FASB Research Conference Committee. Professor Warfield has received teaching awards at both the University of Iowa and the University of Wisconsin, and he was named to the teaching Academy at the University of Wisconsin in 1995. Professor Warfield has developed and published several case studies based on his research for use in accounting classes. Theses cases have been selected for the AICPA Professor-Practitioner Case Development Program and have been published in Issues in Accounting Education.

About the Author
An avid interest in Australian history and a chance family incident triggered a search by Leon Isackson and his siblings for information about their maternal grandparents. The more they researched, the more fascinating the information became. Fortunately Isackson had already written a hugely successful first book (and an updated version some years later) about his Rock and Roll career. He had the skills and enthusiasm to now gather this new (to him) true and wonderful material about his family into a book which encompasses one of the most fascinating and tough eras of Australian history and describes the antics of many colourful characters so well-known to us all, whose paths crossed with those of Leon’s ancestors again and again. Sydney-born Leon Isackson enjoyed a career as a drummer extraordinaire in the most exciting era of Australian Rock and Roll, performing in what were to become famous bands, in fact great icons of those heady years. He began with Dig Richards & The R’jays in 1959, which became The Rajahs in 1964 and Johnny O’Keefe’s backing band for three years. He entertained the troops in Vietnam with Lucky Starr and then Eden Kane; this led to the creation of the Australian Overseas Forces Entertainment Fund. Other famous names Isackson either toured with or recorded and arranged for were The Chant, the Delltones, Johnny Farnham, Russell Morris and the amazing Winifred Atwell with whom he played for several years. In the 90s he co-founded The Mighty Guys with guitarist, Mick Hamilton, which made three successful albums for Glenn A Baker. Based on his diaries from 1956 to 1966, Isackson’s first book, Behind the Rock, co-authored with the late Jon Hayton, was released by Time-Life in 1990 to rave reviews. It was then released again by Sid-Harta in 2010 as Behind the Rock and Beyond, updated by Isackson to 1980. Leon Isackson lives on the Northern Beaches in Sydney with his family and, as well as writing and researching, continues to play and write music.

Never knew I would learn Japan's history in depth from an American writer. Truly a great book teaching us the foreign affairs proving insight even today. Reminds me that we are built on this history.
I liked the fact that she also represents the side which makes US culture healthy.

Inspirational! This book lives up to its title!

I am a subject matter expert who was occassionally requested to make training presentations. I began to realize that training was my calling. I was then hired to plan training programs. By chance, I ran across this book. After reading the book, I was so inspired I wanted to read it again to ensure that I didn't miss anything important. Here is what happened next. I needed to plan training for professionals in a country I had never visited -- truly a risky venture! Relying on the principles in this book, I designed a program that really involved the participants (the students). For example, in the afternoon of the first day of the workshop, students were meeting with each other in breakout sessions, identifying "promising practices" and "best practices" and making presentations to the whole group. The workshop lasted three days. My supervisors really liked the design of the program. The instructors/facilitators loved participating in the program. And, most importantly, the students/participants loved it so much that I am told to expect twice as many students/participants at the next session. As one instructor/facilitator put it, if the goal of the program was to both create joy and share knowledge, the goal was achieved. Without the information in this book (about how the brain works, about the importance of joy to successful training, about the importance of giving the students/participants the opportunity to create knowledge, etc., etc.), my program would not have been the success that it was. To the author -- Dave Meier (whom I have never met) -- I have these words: "Your book inspired me. It inspired me to design a great training program ... a training program even better than I could have imagined. Because of the importance of the training program, I will look back at the program as one of the great achievements in my life. And I owe it to you. Thank you."

excellent training tool

I was getting ready to prepare a training program for 44 persons when I read this book. Immediately! after I used the guidelines to prepare my session. Preparation was fast and easy -and fun! I really couldn't believe that it was that easy to apply and it has been one of my best sessions to date. I refer to it when I need a refresher or a new perspective. I definately reccomend this book for trainers who need to keep their material fresh and interesting (esp. in-house trainers).

Antiquated ideas

A company for whom I was doing some consulting had recently come across this book and was looking at it to reduce the time to develop and implement learning solutions. I read this so that I could understand what they liked about the approach and how it could be used.

Quite honestly, I thought the book was incredibly elementary. Yes, I suppose it could appeal to folks who are just starting out in instructional design. But it does reinforce some out-of-date concepts, such as learning styles (whether or not people are visual, auditory or kinesthetic learners.) Learning styles only mean that the learner themselves prefer to learn a certain way - not that they CANNOT learn in any other way. The learning styles theory is not one that should be promoted. Kirkpatrick's Four Levels of Evaluation are also promoted in this book, which is another old way of doing things. I would never do smile sheets (Level One) again and you can't measure knowledge transfer without defining success first and ensuring that the learning is not left to chance once the learner leaves the classroom. It takes a good six - nine months before true evaluation can take place. I also fight against Level Two evaluations - life is not a multiple-choice test.

I will agree that the best learning/knowledge transfer occurs when all senses are engaged. I agree that people learn best when they are actively engaged - whole body if possible. The pervasive standard of butts in chairs that extends from grade school through corporate training programs has been debunked over and over and yet no one is willing to make a change.

A master of design

Svoboda, who died in 2002, was one of the most innovative and influential stage designers of the 20th century. He designed more than 700 theatrical productions in his lifetime and founded the Czech school of theatrical performance known as Laterna Magica or Magic Lantern. He came to Western attention at the Brussels Expo of 1958, with "Laterna Magika," a production with director Alfred Radok that combined film, sound, light, mime and dance. His designs made extensive use of light to heighten dramatic effect -- he was quoted as saying, "Light is a material I love. You cannot create stage space without light." His scenography was sought for opera performances in New York's Metropolitan Opera, London's Covent Garden and La Scala in Milan. He continued working until his death, and revolutionizing stage lighting techniques with a combination of slide and film projections, laser beams and holograms.
This book has multiple pictures and sketches of groundplans and architecture for his early productions and is highly recommended as an introduction to the techniques and philosophy of a modern master of stagecraft.

DENNIS C. GHIGLIA is a Senior Scientist at the Vexcel Corporation in Boulder, Colorado, and formerly a distinguished member of the technical staff at Sandia National Laboratories. Dr. Ghiglia has written numerous articles and papers, coauthored Spotlight-Mode Synthetic Aperture Radar: A Signal Processing Approach, and holds two U.S. patents.

MARK D. PRITT is a Senior Engineer for Lockheed Martin Corporation, where he has worked on the research and development of image processing and phase unwrapping algorithms for nearly a decade. Dr. Pritt has published numerous papers and articles and holds five U.S. patents.

Valuable book for workers in the field of phase unwrapping

This book is a very specialized book and is of little interest to most readers, but for readers working in the field of phase unwrapping this book is a must. This book gives methods of solving phase unwrapping problems. Four path-following and four minimum-norm techniques are described. A detailed analysis is presented for each algorithm. The distinctive feature of each algorithm is given and the algorithms are ranked in terms of their execution times, memory requirements, and successes and failures on the phase unwrapping examples. Guidelines are given for deciding which algorithm applies to a given problem. A suite of C language programs and routines comprising over 6000 lines of source code that implement the ideas and algorithms discussed in the book, and data sets, can be downloaded from the Wiley FTP site.

Gives clear explainations of the 2D phase unwrapping problem and many of it's possible solutions, with comparisons between them. C code is included, as well as psuedo code for each algorithm, that is easily translated into other programming languages.
