About the Author
Jeffrey A. Hoffer (hoffer@udayton.edu) is the Sherman -- Standard Register Professor of Data Management in the MIS, Operations Management, and Decision Sciences Department at the University of Dayton. He received a PhD from Cornell University in 1973 and was on the faculties of Case Western Reserve University and Indiana University before joining UD. He is a founder of the INFORMS College on Information Systems, the International Conference on Information Systems (and its conference chair in 1985), and the Association for Information Systems. He is author of many scholarly publications in the areas of database management, data warehousing, systems analysis, strategic systems planning, and human-computer interaction. He is co-author of several leading textbooks: "Modern Database Management," "Modern Systems Analysis and Design," "Essentials of Systems Analysis and Design," "Object-Oriented Systems Analysis and Design," and "Managing Information Technology: What Managers Need to Know," all published by Prentice-Hall. This text is designed for an introductory course in database management. I Such a course is usually required as part of an information systems curriculum in business schools, computer technology programs, and applied computer science departments. The Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP), Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and International Federation of Information Processing Societies (IFIPS) curriculum guidelines (for example, IS `97) all outline this type of database management course. Previous editions of our text have been used successfully for more than 15 years at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as in management and professional development programs.

This text represents an extensive revision and updating of the fifth edition of Modern Database Management. These revisions are necessary to accommodate the technical, managerial, and methodological changes occurring at an ever-increasing pace in this field. However, we have endeavored to retain the best features of our previous editions. We have made every effort to justify the title Modern Database Management, which was introduced in the fourth edition.

In this sixth edition we have changed the order of authorship because of the reduced involvement of Fred McFadden as he eases into retirement. Fred has reviewed every page of the manuscript and provided sage guidance on the direction of the revisions. Fred McFadden is the "father" of this text, and his words and ideas will always be present on its pages.

New to This Edition

The sixth edition of Modern Database Management updates and expands materials in areas undergoing rapid change due to improved managerial practices, database design tools and methodologies, and database technology. The themes of the sixth edition reflect the major trends in the informations systems field and the skills required of modern information systems graduates:

• Web-enabled systems design and programming within an overall client/server architecture for systems
• Large-scale databases and data warehouses
• Clarifying system requirements through thorough system modeling and design
• Criticality of database performance in an increasingly on-line environment
• SQL as a standard for database querying

In all the chapters, new screen captures are included to reflect the latest database technologies and a new Web Resources section lists Websites that can provide the student with the information on the latest database trends and expanded background details on important topics covered in the text. The major structural changes to the text are:

• The two object-oriented database chapters are now adjacent chapters, and have been moved to the end of the text, where they are presented as a continuous coverage of this emerging database technology and where they do not break up the natural flow among the other chapters.
• The client/server section of the book has been extensively rewritten and now emphasizes the Internet, intranet, and extranet as implementations of a client/server architecture.
• SQL is now covered in more depth and in two chapters.
• The data warehousing chapter has been significantly rewritten and moved forward as a chapter in the implementation section of the book, representing the explosive growth of this form of database.

The following presents a chapter-by-chapter description of the major changes in this edition. Each chapter description presents a statement of the purpose of that chapter, followed by a description of the changes and revisions that have been made since the fifth edition. Each paragraph concludes with a description of the strengths that have been retained from the fifth edition.

Part I: The Context of Database Management

Chapter 1: The Database Environment. This chapter discusses the role of databases in organizations and previews the major topics in the remainder of the text. The chapter introduces a revised classification scheme that now recognizes the four types of databases outlined in the fifth edition—personal, work group, departmental, and enterprise—and now includes Internet/ intranet/extranet databases. The explanation of enterprise databases is expanded to include databases that are part of enterprise resource planning systems and data warehouses. The chapter updates the discussion of the evolution of database technologies from pre-database files to modern object-relational and Web-enabled systems. The chapter continues to present a well-organized comparison of database technology compared to conventional file-processing systems.

Chapter 2: Database Development Process. This chapter presents a detailed discussion of the role of database development within the broader context of information systems development. The chapter explains the process of database development for both structured life cycle and prototyping methodologies. The chapter continues to discuss important issues in database development, including management of the diverse group of people involved in database development and frameworks for understanding database architectures and technologies. The chapter also continues to emphasize the information engineering methodology in database development, including the role of the enterprise data model. Reviewers frequently note the compatibility of this chapter with what students learn in systems analysis and design classes.

Part II: Database Analysis

Chapter 3: Modeling Data in the Organization. This chapter, with a new title, presents a thorough introduction to conceptual data modeling with the entity-relationship model. The new chapter title reflects a refocusing of the chapter on the reason for the entity-relationship model: to unambiguously document the rules of the business that influence database design. The chapter contains a thoroughly updated section on the latest approaches to modeling business rules, which has been moved from Chapter 4. Specific subsections explain in detail how to name and define elements of a data model, which are essential in developing an unambiguous E-R diagram. A new section addresses an issue many students face as they learn data modeling: whether to represent data as attributes or relationships. The chapter continues to proceed from simple to more complex examples, and it concludes with a comprehensive E-R diagram for Pine Valley Furniture Company.

Chapter 4: The Enhanced E-R Model and Business Rules. This chapter presents a discussion of several advanced E-R data model constructs. New to the chapter is an introduction of entity clustering, which is a way to present simpler versions of an E-R diagram. The chapter extensively updates coverage of the GUIDE business rules methodology based on the latest guidelines, and now shows the structure of these guidelines, which will facilitate student understanding. The chapter continues to present a thorough coverage of supertype/subtype relationships.

Part III: Database Design

Chapter 5: Logical Database Design and the Relational Model. This chapter describes the process of converting a conceptual data model to the relational data model. It features an improved discussion of the characteristics of foreign keys and introduces the important concept of a non-intelligent enterprise key. Enterprise keys (also called surrogate keys for data warehouses) are being emphasized as some concepts of object-orientation migrate into the relational technology world. The discussion of functional dependencies and normalization has been somewhat enhanced. The chapter continues to emphasize the basic concepts of the relational data model and the role of the database designer in the logical design process.

Chapter 6: Physical Database Design and Performance. This chapter describes the steps that are essential in achieving an efficient database design. The chapter contains a new emphasis on ways to improve database performance. Several sections have been enhanced with references to specific techniques available in Oracle and other DBMSs to improve database processing performance. The discussion of indexes has been expanded to include descriptions of types of indexes (primary and secondary indexes, join index, hash index table) that are more widely available in database technologies as techniques to improve query processing speed. The discussion of RAID has been updated to reflect the latest thinking on this important technology. The chapter continues to emphasize the physical design process and the goals of that process.

Part IV: Implementation

Chapter 7: SQL. This chapter presents a thorough introduction to the SQL used by most DBMSs (SQL-92) and introduces the changes that are included in the latest standard (SQL-99). The major change for the sixth edition is that the overall coverage of SQL is expanded and divided into this and the next chapter. This chapter includes more examples of SQL code, using mostly SQL-99 syntax and some Oracle 8i syntax. There is an improved coverage of views, both dynamic and materialized. Chapter 7 explains the SQL commands to create and maintain a database and to program single-table queries. The chapter continues to use the Pine Valley Furniture Company case to illustrate a wide variety of practical queries and query results.

Chapter 8: Advanced SQL. This new chapter continues the explanation of SQL with a careful explanation of multiple-table queries, transaction integrity, data dictionary, triggers and stored procedures, and embedded SQL in other programming language programs. All forms of the OUTER JOIN command are now covered. This chapter illustrates how to store the results of a query in a derived table, the CAST command to convert data between different data types, and the CASE command for doing conditional processing in SQL. Amazingly well written

I bought this book for a DBMS course in a university and I liked it. This is the best written book compared to any IT book on any subject I've read. Everything seems so easy and simple with this. And this covers a lot of ground, enough at least for any basic level DBMS course. It covers the basics, SQL, (E)ER-diagrams, O-O db's, warehousing, etc.
What this is NOT: this is not a hands-on guide for real work. This is the first introduction to what you should know before beginning any DB-related work.

Great Introductory Text

Good up-to-date introductory text on Database Systems. It covers all the bases although in a less quantative way than the Elmasri/Navathe or Ramakrishnan/Gehrke texts. Excellent web based support material. Also, if you get the Oracle Edition (ISBN 0201383721) you'll get 3 great CD's: Oracle Designer/2000, Rel. 2.1; Oracle Developer/2000, Rel. 2.1, and Personal Oracle 7, Rel. 7.3.4. I found this package of text and CD's to be the best value on the market.

Good content overall

I used this book in graduate school while taking the Database Management System course. The book has usefull information. It help me understand and practice normalization. Some unfamiliar concepts also were learnt from the book. I can recommend this book to anyone getting into the database world.

By age 16, the author of this alternately piquant and morose memoir was dealing marijuana, bedding her instructors at a performing arts high school and studying the oboe. Later, her blossoming career as a freelance musician in New York introduced her to a classical music demimonde of cocaine parties and group sex that had her wondering why she "got hired for so many of my gigs in bed." But the vivace of the chapters on her bohemian salad days subsides to a largo as she heads toward 40 and the sex and drugs recede along with dreams of stardom; the reality of a future in Broadway orchestra pits (where she reads magazines as she plays to stave off boredom) sets in. Tindall escaped to journalism, but her resentment of an industry that "squeezed me dry of spontaneity" and turns other musicians into hollow-eyed "galley slaves" is raw. She mounts a biting critique of the conservatories that churn out thousands of graduates each year to pursue a handful of jobs, the superstar conductors and soloists who lord it over orchestral peons and a fine arts establishment she depicts as bloated and ripe for downsizing. Tindall's bitterness over what might still strike many readers as a pretty great career is a bit overdone, but she offers a fresh, highly readable and caustic perspective on an overglamorized world. For the author, an oboist and journalist, a certain Upper West Side apartment building, long popular with musicians, is a metaphor for classical music in America today: a Beaux-Arts façade masking an increasingly decrepit infrastructure. Tindall's book, her first, is hardly free of false notes. Paragraphs full of dire predictions and alarming statistics jibe a little too conveniently with her tales of professional disappointment and sexual promiscuity. As Tindall sleeps her way to the bottom, we learn more than we probably need to about the sex lives of some more or less prominent American musicians. But Tindall's central complaint—that the classical-music world has created a crisis by training too many musicians and supporting a culture of exorbitant pay for a few fortunate stars—is difficult to refute.

Should be required reading for all performance majors!

This book ought to be required reading for all performance majors as well as the parents who push them. Sexual and psychological abuse is terrible in music programs. Although there is much less tolerance these days for teachers who get caught with their pants down, the psychological abuse rages on. I'm not sure people who weren't in this environment could possibly understand it. The book mirrored my experience as a young violinist- I got tons of positive re-enforcement for my playing ability, but not for anything else. I truly believed for a long time that my only talent was music. On top of that, teachers, conductors, and family told me it would be a travesty- a waste of my God given talent- to not pursue music. No one talked about the nearly impossible odds of success. It really does a number on your head, as evidenced by Tindall's reporting. Add to it the sexual abuse by teachers, and well…no surprise what happens: drugs and sexual promiscuity. Inflated ego and a crushingly low self esteem in the same person.

Tindall doesn't play the victim in the book, and I'm not even sure if she would describe her teen experiences as sexual abuse (she doesn't in the book, but- for the record, being required to touch your teacher and being forced to touch him IS sexual abuse…). She also doesn't get too much into how teachers and conductors systematically psychologically abuse young musicians. Had she made the abuse she (and tons of young musicians) suffered more explicit in the book, readers could have sympathized with some of her self-destructive behaviors. I think she tries not to come off as playing the victim, but the flip side is that some readers forget that she was victimized. To be honest, there's probably another book in there and I hope she writes it.

*as an aside to all the Amazon reviewers who criticized her for complaining about working on Broadway- you get out an instrument and sheet music for Les Mis, play it every night for three hours year after year after year. Then you can critique. I wanted to shoot myself after just three shows.

True to life

Because this a mix of autobiography and socioeconomic commentary, some readers may discount the book's discussion points if they don't find the author's experience relevant. I had the opposite experience; the personal narrative resonated deeply for me and the social analysis struck me as brilliantly apt.

I found this book to be a breath of fresh air. I was a full scholarship recipient at Manhattan School of Music in '79-80 and later worked as a young musician in the New York scene in the early '80's. Everything I read about studying and working as a musician was very familiar. Moreover, the discussion of how musical pedagogy and professionalism has devolved is uniquely astute.

I found the author's recap of the narrow conservatory vibe refreshingly apt. The pathetic joke of the single "humanities" class we performance majors were forced to take, to make us "well rounded" is still bittersweet. The drinking, drugs, emotional instability, grit, poverty, politics, and incestuousness of the conservatory and working musical scene are also all very true to my experience.

That was a fleeting, surreal, and somewhat magical moment, in NYNY in the early-mid '80's. That scene is gone, now. But what a great snapshot!

Those critics who decry the author as someone writing "from the bottom" of the musical strata are sadly out of touch with the realities of "making it" as a player. The author was clearly a talented, skilled, strong, working musician. She was successful. That's one of the book's strong points; being "really good" or even being a "working pro" isn't enough. Most great players practice every day for hours, have the best educations, play their butts off, and still scuffle until they are too old to do it anymore. This is the hidden reality of professional musicianship.

Yes, that is truly what it was like, there and then. I was not a beautiful female, like the author, so some of the networking opportunities she used weren't available to me, but the rest of it rings very, very true.

Like the author, though, I had as much success in that scene as suited me. I feel very lucky to have found another way to make a living that I prefer. I still play, for fun now, and still practice every day; it remains an important part of my life.

I would recommend this book to any and all music students who are considering a conservatory as their next educational step. This is a great, great, piece of writing about a virtually hidden world. Bravo!

whoa....

This was a blast from MY past. Trained as a classical oboist at about the same time as the author....well, some of the book was greatly amusing, some of it was a trip down memory lane...actually a lot of it was that. It was disturbing and kind of like a huge flashback for me. Very honest and insightful look at the real world of performing. I remember being the guest at a symphony ladies' tea and having them gush all over me..."oh, it must be so much fun to just play music all day long". Gush gush gush.....I was probably making less than a third of what they paid their maids,AND I carried a monster size bottle of pepto in my bag which I would swig right from the bottle, trying to calm the nerves caused by trying to please a real S.O.B. of a conductor. Interesting life to be sure.

Dwayne Mooney is an American comedian, writer, social critic, television and film actor. He is best known for his roles in the 1979 movie The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh and his role in the 2016 Bravo Television Reality Docuseries. "Newlyweds: The First Year - Season 3" He is also the son of the famous comedian Paul Mooney. In addition, he is the father of famous actor and comedian/writer Adonis Gladney. Dwayne Mooney resides in Los Angeles California with his wife and his girlfriend. Dwayne Mooney leads a Polyamorous lifestyle and has written his first book on the subject.

I read this book on my lunch break. It was far more interesting than I ever imagined. Now I know why I attract men who are too feminine! That makes the book priceless for me. I have been a part of secret threesomes for decades and it really is old school and cowardice. If this works, there are at least three men I know and love that I would happily join in a polyamorous relationships, but only if they get more in touch with their Alpha Male!

One of the most unusual philanthropic enterprises of the 20th century almost never happened: Newman's Own was the name intended for a restaurant the movie star wanted to open near his home in Westport, Conn. But the idea never went anywhere, freeing up Newman to start a business in the early 1980s with his friend Hotchner, a bestselling author (Papa Hemingway), selling a salad dressing made from Newman's personal recipe. The rest is history. As this breezy memoir recalls, the two broke every rule for launching a new food business, ignoring the failure rate for celebrity-themed products, demanding all-natural ingredients and bypassing nearly every aspect of market research (although they did hold one taste test at the home of local caterer Martha Stewart). Despite all this, they managed to pull in nearly $1 million in profits their first year, all earmarked for charity, and have since launched many more products and donated nearly $140 million. This part of the story doesn't really have a lot of meat to it, but it is an entertaining string of anecdotes, song parodies and wacky customer letters. The book's second half becomes more somber as it shifts focus to the Hole in the Wall Gang, the organization they created to build and run camps for children with serious illnesses. The origins of each of the eight camps are recounted in detail, along with letters from some of the campers. A slew of appendixes, including several recipes utilizing Newman's Own products, rounds out the text.

Movie actor Newman and his writer friend Hotchner broke all the business rules to become significant players in the food industry--and used their profits to open summer camps for critically ill children. They started selling Newman's "home brew" salad dressing in 1982 as a joke, but in the following 20 years they gained national recognition with an expanded product line, allowing them to give away $150 million. Their Hole in the Wall Gang camps (named after the outlaw band led by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, immortalized on film by Newman and Robert Redford), which serve children with life-threatening diseases, became very successful. Shameless Exploitation in Pursuit of the Common Good is an easy book to find fault with. That said, it's also one of the most enjoyable, heartwarming and inspiring books I've read in a while. What these two did is beyond impressive. In a world filled with so many self-serving scoundrels and so much depressing news it's really a pleasure to see what a couple of pals out to have a little fun managed to accomplish. Hooray for them!
